Under the law in California, a Notary Public must complete the notary certificate with the date that the notarization is done. If the documents themselves have a different date listed other than the date of notarization, a Notary Public can still notarize the documents but the notary certificate has to contain the current date. It is against the law for a Notary Public to back-date or forward-date a notary certificate.
